CSA Week 8: Farewell July

Hello All,

The end of July is always bittersweet for me and with it comes large harvests of some of the heavier fruits of our labor. After the garlic is brought in we turn to potatoes, beets, carrots, cabbages and soon enough winter squash and melons. The peppers are starting to turn bright reds and oranges on the plants and the tomatoes and cucumbers are still ripening steadily every day. We are focusing our energy on finishing our fall transplanting this week. Kale, chard, broccolini and broccoli have been planted and later in the week we will get the fennel and lettuce in the ground. I feel like we have been trying to finish the transplanting for weeks, but that is how farming goes; so many tasks to do all at once.

We are halfway through the CSA season! What a pleasure it has been growing food for you this summer so far. For the second half we wish for just a bit more rain, bountiful harvests and some afternoons to relax in the summer beauty. CSA each week is one of the aspects of our farm that keeps us excited. We look forward to sharing the harvests with you all, trying new vegetables and loading up on old favorites. If you haven't made time to pick your own flowers this year we highly recommend it. The flowers won't last forever and it is a simple joy to wander through the flowers among the pollinators.

Our Farm Store is open every day and is self serve. Send us an email or give us a call with any questions. We stock it on Wednesday afternoons. Currently lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, lettuce and more can be found in the store.

Find our produce and eggs at Nature's Green Grocer, Rosaly's Farmstand, Roy's Market and in the delicious food at The Root Cafe in Temple.

Please return egg cartons, pint containers and granola jars to the Farm Store. We greatly appreciate it!

What's in my share this week?

This week may include:

Kale - chop leaves and stems and sauté with oil, salt and pepper.

Garlic - some of the first garlic we harvested is cured and ready to use.

Leeks - we planted many leeks this year and they are looking great. Try a potato leek soup with the new potatoes we are giving out tomorrow.

Leaf Lettuce - a mix of red and green flat and curly. Washed, bagged and ready to salad!

Bell and Frying Peppers - a mix of green, purple, red bell and long frying peppers.  All sweet. the colors are starting to come in at last.

Beets - both red and gold beets. So sweet roasted or grated into salad.

Eggplants - beautiful purple, take two!

Summer Squash - zucchini, yellow summer squash and patty pan. All go great in stir fries or as a soup. If you aren't a huge squash fan try chocolate zucchini muffins to get your veggies in.

Cucumbers  - still pumping out many pounds. Delicious eaten fresh or in a salad.

Cherry Tomatoes - a mix of gold, red and peach. Tastes like summer! Try them in the sheet pan chicken recipe below.

Full Size Tomatoes - yellow and orange striped, purple and classic red.

Kohlrabi - a funky vegetable that tastes like a sweet broccoli stem. Cut up and enjoy raw and grated into a salad or make kohlrabi fritters (see below) I tried these last year and they were delicious.

New Potatoes - in April we planted a row of new potatoes in one of our hoop houses. They looked great for awhile but then got decimated by potato beetles. Hopefully they taste good!
