Hello All,
Mid August has arrived and we are working hard to weed our brassicas, plant cover crops and harvest. Last week we finished harvesting the rest of our onions and laid them out to dry in the attic of the barn. See picture above! We are thrilled with the harvest this year especially because last year we lost almost our entire onion crop to a combination of bugs and intense rains. Onions are a staple for most people, so it feels good to be able to provide such a kitchen classic.
Now that the heat and humidity of July are behind us, we seem to be getting lots of rain, often in the form of small squalls throughout the day. The fall crops are loving it and so are the farmers. Plus sleeping at night is much easier.
On a disappointing note, we have noticed one of our varieties of cherry tomatoes shrivels up very quickly in storage. Someone let us know via email that their pint shriveled and molded quickly on the counter. If this happened to you, please let us know! We would be happy to have you take an extra pint this week. So sorry for this, we are a bit upset about it but, every year we learn something new. That is farming for you!
The flowers are still going strong but some have started to fade. Make sure to find some time to take advantage of flower picking while you can. The farm has settled into its late summer hues; deep golds and greens, dark reds and blues. Although our to do list is never ending we have begun to feel the exhale of summer as it turns toward slower growth. Now is the time to freeze or can some of summer's bounty for winter, enjoy the tall tall sunflowers and eat way too many tomato sandwiches (is there such a thing?!)
