Hello All,
Though the day started sunny, we knew rain was coming. So Jasen got to the farm with one goal in mind; spread rye cover crop seed. Once most of the main season crops are pulled or mowed, we spread rye seed over the fields to add fertility and structure to the soil. It is a farmer's thank you to the land that has given us so much over the season. Over the course of the next few weeks more areas of the farm will be seeded to cover crop, which always reminds me of tucking something in for a restful off season. Jasen finished spreading seed mere minutes before the rain started, a torrential downpour with thunder and lightening. Perfect timing to soak the newly spread seed for germination.
Last week we had our Organic Certification inspection visit which is an intense process. We spend many hours each week recording everything we do on the farm in order to maintain our certification. We must have records for seeding, field work, harvest, sales and everything in between on the farm. During the inspection they choose a crop at random and ask you to trace it back to seed. Having all the records is vital for this process. This year especially has been stressful because New Hampshire stopped certifying farms and we had to find a new certifier just days after we submitted our NH application. All that being said, our inspector was kind and knowledgable and we felt great after the visit. We are proud of our certification, but most importantly our farm, work and the food we produce. Thanks for supporting what we do!
